Pet Doors and Security Screens: What You Need to Know

For a lot of Australian households, a pet door is a must. It gives your dog or cat the freedom to come and go, saves you getting up every five minutes to let them in or out, and keeps them comfortable when you’re not home.

If you’ve got security screens, or you’re planning to get them, it’s worth understanding how a pet door fits in before you decide where to put one.

Can you put a pet door in a security screen?

Yes. CommandeX can fit a pet door into a SecureView screen door, so your pet can come and go while the rest of the door keep the stength of SecureView’s 316 marine-grade stainless steel mesh and patented keyway fixing system.

It’s a popular option for back doors, courtyards and patios, especially in homes where pets spend a lot of time outside.

Getting the balance right

Most homeowners find the best setup is:

  • A full security door on the front entry. It’s the door most exposed on the street, so keep it fully secure
  • A pet door on a back or side door, ideally one that open onto a fenced yard your pets already use
  • The right-sized pet door, as small as your pet can comfortably use, and positioned well away from the lock

That way your main entry stays fully protected, and your pets still get their freedom.

Common questions

Can a burglar get through a pet door?

A person usually can’t fit through a pet door, but an opening can let someone see or reach inside. That’s why size and position matter, and why we recommend keeping pet doors off your main entry.

Can I fit a pet door into my security screen door?

Yes. You can get a SecureView screen door with a pet door fitted, so your pet can come and go as they please.

Keep in mind that once a pet door is fitted, the door is no longer classed as a security door. That’s why most homeowners put the pet door on a back door, courtyard or patio, and keep the front entry fully secure

Will my dog damage a security screen?

Stainless steel security mesh is far tougher than standard fly screen and holds up well to paws and claws. See our tips on protecting your screen door from your pets.
