Why Most Security Screens Fail in Extreme Coastal Australia & What to Specify Instead

Over 85% of Australians live within 50 kilometres of the coast. Salt air, humidity and coastal weather are a daily reality for millions of Australian homeowners. Yet most security screens are engineered for standard residential environments, not the harsh, relentless conditions that coastal living demands.

The result? Corrosion, degradation and premature failure. A security screen that looks great on installation day but tells a very different story five years later.

Why coastal environments are different

Salt air is corrosive in ways most homeowners and installers don’t fully appreciate. Marine atmospheric environments, particularly within close proximity to the coastline contain significantly higher concentrations of chloride ions that dramatically accelerate metal corrosion compared to inland conditions. Protective coatings break down faster, oxidation accelerates and corrosion works from the inside out.

The damage doesn’t happen overnight. It happens gradually over years. By the time it’s visible it’s already significantly advanced.

For properties within 500 metres of the coastline, or up to 2 kilometres on escarpments where prevailing winds carry salt air inland, a security screen that performs perfectly in an inland environment can begin showing signs of corrosion within 2-3 years without the right specification.

Why 316 marine grade is the starting point – not the whole answer

All CommandeX security screens use 316 marine grade stainless steel mesh, the same grade used in marine hardware, boat fittings and coastal infrastructure. 316 contains 2-3% molybdenum which dramatically increases its resistance to chloride corrosion compared to standard 304 structural grade steel.

But in extreme coastal environments, directly on the waterfront, on escarpments, in areas where constant salt spray occurs, the 316 marine grade mesh needs to have additional protection. The aluminium frame, powder coating and fixing system which all need to be engineered for extreme corrosive conditions. The difference between getting screen that performs for 20 years and one that starts showing corrosion within three comes down to specification.

That’s exactly what the SaltWaterSeries is built for, for this exact environment.

What makes SaltWaterSeries different

SaltWaterSeries starts with the same 316 marine grade stainless steel mesh as SecureView Eclipx, 0.8mm wire, 940MPa tensile strength, patented fixing system with 3m VHB adhesive eliminating metal on metal contact.

But SaltWaterSeries goes further with an additional protective powder coating on the frame specifically formulated for extreme corrosive environments. This additional coating layer provides the extra barrier between the aluminium frame and the relentless salt air that extreme coastal properties demand.

The SaltWaterSeries frame coating is independently tested to 3,000 hours under AS2331.3.1, three times the standard residential result. It carries additional testing for cyclone resistance and fire attenuation and is backed by a 20 year extended warranty.

What SaltWaterSeries is designed for

SaltWaterSeries is specifically designed for:

  • Coastal properties within 500 metres of the coastline
  • Properties on escarpments within 2 kilometres where prevailing winds carry salt air
  • Iron rich red dust prone areas
  • Heavy industrial environments

If your property falls within any of these environments, a standard security screen is not the right specification.

Independent testing

SaltWaterSeries is independently tested by AZUMA Design & Testing, a NATA approved testing laboratory, and meets or exceeds Australian Standards AS5039-2023 across all required tests plus additional testing specifically relevant to extreme environments:

Maintenance matters

Think of it like your car, you wouldn’t skip servicing and expect it to perform at its best. A security screen in a coastal environment is no different. The right product, correctly installed and properly maintained, will perform for decades. Cut corners on any one of those three and you end up with corroded security screen.

Even the right product needs proper care. SaltWaterSeries screens in coastal environments should be rinsed with fresh water regularly to remove salt build up, more frequently the closer the property is to waterfront. For a full maintenance guide including recommended cleaning products and frequency by coastal distance, read our Security Screen Cleaning Guide.

The Rockford advantage

Behind every SaltWaterSeries installation is the full support of the CommandeX Group. Rockford Screens & Blinds custom manufactures SaltWaterSeries products to exact trade specifications with a guaranteed 10 working day turnaround, consistent quality, every time.

The bottom line

The price difference between a standard security screen and a SaltWaterSeries is a fraction of the cost of one coastal callback. Specify the right product first time, protect your time, your margin and your reputation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the SaltWaterSeries warranty?

SaltWaterSeries carries a 20 year extended warranty when registered online within 60 days of installation by a licensed CommandeX dealer. No other security screen manufacturer offers a dedicated extreme coastal product with a 20 year warranty.

What maintenance does SaltWaterSeries require?

SaltWaterSeries screens should be rinsed with fresh water regularly to remove salt build up, more frequently the closer the property is to the waterfront. CommandeX recommends using CommandeX Clean and CommandeX Protect cleaning products to maintain the mesh and frame coating. Regular maintenance is required to keep the 20 year extended warranty valid. For a full maintenance schedule including recommended cleaning frequency by coastal distance read our Security Screen Cleaning Guide.

Why is frame coating important in coastal environments?

In coastal environments salt air contains high concentrations of chloride ions that attack metal surfaces, including the aluminium frame of a security screen. While 316 marine grade stainless steel mesh provides strong corrosion resistance, the aluminium frame relies on its powder coating as the primary barrier against salt air penetration. A standard powder coating will degrade faster in extreme coastal conditions once the coating breaks down, corrosion of the aluminium frame accelerates significantly. The SaltWaterSeries uses an additional protective powder coating on the frame specifically formulated for extreme coastal environments, independently tested to 3,000 hours under AS2331.3.1, the neutral salt spray test used to measure corrosion resistance of metal coatings.
